How to Format Individual Columns in Tableau based on Criterion

As businesses today continue to grow at a rapid pace, the amount of data generated and associated analytics continues to sky-rocket. Visualization tools like Tableau are playing, and will continue to play an even bigger role in decision-making in the years to come. Effective decision making is powered by insightful dashboards and intuitive visualization practices.

One such scenario is when we want to highlight specific cells in a column meeting our custom criterion, but not all the other columns corresponding to that cell (default behavior). This can be achieved by quickly creating pairs of calculated fields as shown below, and corresponding dual axises. Here, using the Sample Superstore dataset, we are highlighting Product Sub-Categories which had negative Profit with a different color. Note how Sales column continues to stay unchanged for the rows corresponding to the highlighted cell, only our specific cells for the particular column gets highlighted.
